The importance of community for businesses

Over the last few months, more people than ever before have been thrown into remote work and all the positives and negatives that come with it.

One of the biggest adjustments people have had to make is being totally cut off from not only their social network, but also their community in general, including the business community that so many small businesses, freelance and remote workers usually rely on.

Many of these entrepreneurs and employees will have been left with a feeling of isolation, and at a time when all aspects of business are experiencing challenges, may also feel unsupported and unsure of their next steps.

It may seem that in the face of a global economic depression business would default to fierce competition, but for many the opposite seems to be true, as they go out of their way to help and support each other.

Although we have been unable to interact as we normally would, the way businesses and people have responded to Covid-19 shows clearly how highly we rate these interactions.

Video conferencing technology has seen a surge of popularity not only within businesses, but for group meeting of all kinds.

Local businesses have banded together to create offers and enticements to encourage people to shop local and find new ways of delivering their goods and services.

Online forums and social channels have become a refuge for many struggling with the new conditions, and in many ways the sense of community has grown as all businesses faced the same challenges.

While this support will have been crucial for many businesses during this time, the worst may still be to come for many businesses as the realities of the recession take hold.

Recovery and rebound

For businesses that do start to see cash flow challenges, that struggle to resume their business or who were just starting out to begin with, being able to interact and connect with a local community going forward will come as a great relief.

There are many ways to integrate with a new community, whether through a dedicated networking group, joining a coworking office or meeting people at industry events. As it becomes easier to interact, meeting in person will be a huge relief for those who have struggled with isolation.

Some of the things a community will be able to offer you include advice and experience, news of new opportunities or resources you may be able to take advantage of, empathy and emotional support and sometimes even collaborations.

While these may seem like small benefits in the face of all the hardships businesses are facing, having a team to support and encourage you will put you in the best position to give your business what it really needs.
